Swinburne University of Technology Advanced Technologies Centre
Architecture - Commercial - Constructed
The Swinburne University Advanced Technologies Centre (SUT ATC) is a cutting edge Engineering focused facility for education and research, designed to be practical and flexible for future changes in education, while enriching and invigorating its occupants and the university. Precast concrete facades differentiate the building from the high rise glass boxes associated with commercial buildings and acknowledge the building’s non-commercial nature. The circular patternation and circular glazing of the facade, strengthen the buildings appearance and reference the contemporary preference for non-rectilinear geometries, currently researched by the engineering community occupying the building.

The new library at Macquarie University is an innovative, welcoming and inspiring landmark building for the University. It represents a new generation of library design — full of dynamic, collaborative, open spaces for learning, rather than traditional notion of a library as a quiet, storage facility for printed materials. The transparent and inviting forms of the building open to embrace and define the new University Common, welcoming students, staff and the public to this new place of learning. It is a radical new library characterised by new opportunities for learning, exchange and interconnection, filled with daylight, fresh air & landscape

Avondale Heights Library & Learning Centre
Architecture - Commercial - Constructed
Avondale Heights in Moonee Ponds is a typical Australian ‘place’. We felt strongly that the cultural aspirations of these residents as reflected in their housing choices and styles had been largely ignored. The Avondale Heights Library and Learning Centre embraces this place, concentrates and reflects it to achieve an expressive local identity. Moonee Ponds was famously satirized by Australian comic Barry Humphries. Later, artists like Howard Arkley changed perceptions of Australian suburbia in a series of bold, luridly depicted and highly charged paintings. The design was inspired by a response to Humphries’ satire and Arkley’s suburban iconography.
Victoria University Learning Commons & Exercise Sports Science
Architecture - Commercial - Constructed
Victoria University in Footscray Victoria resolved to develop the ‘Institute of Sport, Exercise and Active Living’ as a world leader in the field of Sports Science and Biomechanics. The pursuit of such required a dynamic new building to facilitate, inspire and celebrate both athletes and researchers alike. The resultant expansive linear form gives rise to a new front to the campus that proclaims the arrival of a onetime trade school as a serious contender in the high stakes of higher education, and as the vanguard of progression in the post industrial heartland of Melbourne.
500 Bourke Street Podium Redevelopment
Architecture - Commercial - Constructed
500 Bourke Street Melbourne is a key urban site within Melbourne’s CBD Law District. John Wardle Architects were engaged as the base building architects to redevelop the tower podium and adjoining retail precinct. The site includes the NAB office tower, constructed in the 1970s and a series of retail tenancies below street level and a landscaped garden setting fronting Little Bourke Street. The adjacent Supreme Court Dome to the north presented a distinct characteristic and urban setting for this new proposal. Place making was a key theme explored with the aspiration to create an enlivened series of new public spaces.

Architecture - Commercial - Constructed
Distinctive, vibrant and unmistakably modern, Crown Metropol hotel challenges tradition and expresses a sense of individuality with unorthodox elements, dramatic shapes and earthy, grounded silhouettes. Inspired by liquid mercury, the hotels soft lines are enhanced by a shimmering reflective skin. The sensual, fluid form of the building seamlessly flows through to the refined interiors of the hotel. The 28-level Metropol features a unique wave-like shape, sleek futuristic podium entry, 658 spacious guestrooms, luxurious day spa, sky bar and terrace, Gordon Ramsay’s maze restaurant and maze grill, extensive meeting and business centre facilities and a world-class training and recruitment facility.
PEGS Junior Boys School
Architecture - Commercial - Constructed
PEGS Junior Boys School acknowledges and exploits its unusual urban condition, from the street its oversized silhouette dominates, from the sports ground the building is like a federation grandstand. The interior, especially upstairs where the shape of the building’s extrusion is expressed, is intriguing. We hoped to stimulate young boy’s imaginations. Is it Hogwarts? Is it Institutional? We wanted them to have a clear memory of the school life at the end of their junior years.
