The building is a reflection of the owner’s passion for the outdoors and the many wonderful outdoor pursuits including; surfing, fishing, and surf life saving. A desire for a retreat whereby one could simply relax and entertain family and friends in comfortable interior spaces with an integral link to the outdoors. This was more about the connection with the ground rather than views of the water or the beach.

By their very nature, weekenders and beach houses need to provide flexible accommodation so that when numbers swell — especially over long summer holidays — friends and family can be comfortably housed. For that reason Rob Mills always tries to provide separate living areas so that extended family and friends can stay with ease.

This house acts as an optical instrument, a series of devices that frame views beyond the abutting foreshore to the south toward the Heads of Port Phillip Bay. The most significant promenade through the house takes you from the street, along a gently stepped path, to the entry stair, where you are sufficiently elevated to appreciate the view as you arrive at the uppermost level. The careful choreography of this sequence is amplified by materiality and adjacencies: fine timber detailing, woven wicker and calacatta marble in the kitchen. The experience on entry is private and cocooned from the exterior. Once above, the views expand and are focussed on the horizon of the ocean to the south.
